Road salt goes down on Ontario roads long before the first heavy snow. The Ministry of Transportation and municipal crews pre-treat highways when freezing rain or a cold snap is forecast, which in the Greater Toronto Area usually means the first brine appears in November. If you wait until January to think about salt, your car has already spent six or eight weeks carrying it.
This is the single most useful piece of car care advice for a Toronto winter, and it costs nothing to act on: get the protection on before the salt starts, not after.
What salt actually does to your vehicle
Salt and brine are hygroscopic, which means they hold water against metal instead of letting it dry. That is why a salted car rusts faster than a wet one. Three areas take the damage:
- Underbody and wheel wells. Brake lines, subframes and exhaust hangers sit in constant damp salt spray.
- Lower panels and door bottoms. Stone chips let salt reach bare metal, and rust starts from the inside of the panel outward.
- Interior carpets and mats. Salt carried in on boots dries into white crust that works into the fibres and stains permanently if it is left all season.
The timing that works in the GTA

Why washing in freezing weather still helps
Drivers often skip washing between December and February because the car will be dirty again in a day. The point is not appearance. A rinse that removes chloride from the underbody slows corrosion whether or not the paint looks clean afterwards. Pick a day above freezing, get the underside rinsed, and dry the door and trunk seals so they do not freeze shut.
If you park in an underground garage, the problem is the opposite: the car sits warm and wet, and the salt stays active for hours instead of freezing. Condo cars often need washing more often in winter, not less.
What to do about the interior
Salt stains on carpet are alkaline. Rinsing with plain water spreads them; the white ring usually comes back as it dries. A hot-water extraction with a mild acidic cleaner is what removes them properly, which is what an interior detail does. Between details, three habits help:
- Use deep rubber winter mats, not carpet mats, and shake them out weekly.
- Knock the snow off your boots before you get in. Most salt arrives on footwear.
- Keep a small brush in the car for the driver footwell, where the worst of it lands.
