October is the most useful month of the year for car care in the Greater Toronto Area. The weather is still dry enough for protection products to cure, the salt trucks have not started, and detailers are not yet booked out. Here are seven jobs worth doing before November.
1. Strip and re-protect the paint
Summer leaves a film of pollen, bug residue and industrial fallout that ordinary washing does not remove. A decontamination wash followed by a sealant or coating gives salt something to sit on other than your clear coat. Protection applied in October is still working in March.
2. Clean the door and trunk seals, then treat them
Rubber seals freeze to the paint when they are dirty and damp. Wipe them and apply a silicone or rubber conditioner. It takes ten minutes and saves a torn seal in January.
3. Fit proper winter mats
Deep rubber trays with a raised lip hold slush and salt instead of letting it soak into the carpet. Carpet mats do the opposite. This one change prevents most salt staining.
4. Deal with stone chips now
Every chip on the hood and lower doors is an opening for salt to reach bare metal. Touch-up paint in October stops a rust bubble in April.
5. Clean the glass properly, inside and out
Winter sun sits low and every smear becomes glare. Clean the inside of the windshield — the film from plastics off-gassing is what scatters the light — and top up washer fluid rated for cold.
6. Deep clean the interior before it gets used hard
Once winter starts, an interior detail becomes a repair job rather than maintenance. Doing it in autumn means the fabric enters winter clean and protected.
7. Check the wheels
Brake dust baked on all summer is corrosive. Clean the wheels properly, including the barrels, and consider a wheel sealant so winter grime rinses off.
